Welcome

This course will examine mental health conditions and nutrition, exploring the association between the two and how they each interrelate with one another. First, there will be an introduction into mental health, describing what it is and its impacts both worldwide as well as in the U.S. Some recent statistics will be provided, as well as facts regarding two of the most common type of mental health conditions – anxiety and depression. Then, a list of symptoms of mental health conditions will be presented. In the second part of the course, nutrition will be examined, offering an overview while explaining the various components within nutrition, such as macronutrients and micronutrients. These will explore carbohydrates, proteins, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals, first listing them and then examining how they impact the human body. Then, the symptoms of nutrient depletion will be presented, showing how these correspond with many of the symptoms of mental health conditions. Finally, in the third part of this course, the connection between mental health and nutrition will be explored, describing which foods are best for improving mood and alleviating the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress.
