How to Change Your Last Name After Getting Married in Florida

Just got married in Florida and want to change your last name? The process is usually simple. In most cases, if you are taking your spouse’s last name, your certified marriage certificate serves as legal evidence of your name change.

Here are the basic steps:

1. Get Your Certified Marriage Certificate

After your wedding, make sure your marriage has been officially recorded. Obtain a certified copy of your marriage certificate, as you may need it throughout the name-change process.

2. Update Your Name with Social Security

Start with the Social Security Administration (SSA). Request that your name be updated and obtain a new Social Security card reflecting your married name.

3. Update Your Florida Driver’s License

After updating your information with Social Security, change your name on your Florida driver’s license or state identification card.

Be prepared to provide the required identification and your certified marriage certificate.

4. Update Your Passport

If you have a U.S. passport, you should also update it to reflect your new legal name. The process and required documents may vary depending on when your current passport was issued.

5. Update Your Other Accounts and Documents

Once your primary identification documents have been updated, remember to change your name with:

  • Banks and credit cards

  • Employer and payroll

  • Insurance companies

  • Voter registration

  • Mortgage and property records

  • Utility companies

  • Professional licenses

  • Other important accounts and records

That’s It!

Changing your last name after marriage may seem like a lot of paperwork, but taking it one step at a time makes the process much easier.

Quick Tip: Start with Social Security, then update your Florida driver’s license, and afterward work through your remaining accounts and documents.
